The long-standing horror series Resident Evil recently convinced with the eighth part Village and will logically be continued. Does Resident Evil 9 possibly rely on an open game world?
The horror games in the Resident Evil series are known to be more linear titles, but that could possibly change in the future with Resident Evil 9, which is currently in the works. One of the most renowned Capcom leakers is now bringing an open game world into play for the next part of the franchise.
In this case, what is meant is Dusk Golem, who has already been right in a number of cases with his information about Capcom and thus also Resident Evil titles. He has already confirmed that Resident Evil 9 is currently scheduled for release in 2025 – and then the new game could appear as an open-world title.
The insider works out that Capcom usually greenlights a triumvirate of new games at the same time so that they can go into production. Most recently there were Devil May Cry 5, Resident Evil: Village and the remake of Resident Evil 2 – with the aim that all three parts made use of the then latest version of the RE Engine.
In the meantime, Capcom has released three more projects: the brand new Dragon’s Dogma 2, Monster Hunter Wilds and Resident Evil 9. Capcom is said to have explicitly had an eye on expanding the open-world functionality of its in-house engine, according to Dusk Golem.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is currently the first game to successfully use the RE Engine in a AAA open-world experience – Monster Hunter Wilds and Resident Evil 9 are supposed to be based on this. How extensive the possible open world ambitions of Resident Evil 9 will be remains to be seen. Village was also once said to be an open game world title – in the end there was a smaller, connected world of a more classic style. Either way: Even if the latest Resident Evil part has some form of open-world approach, it should still preserve the DNA of the franchise, according to Dusk Golem.
