Yesterday we finally got to see the first gameplay of Return to Monkey Island during the Nintendo Direct Mini. The Return of Ron Gilbert to direct the legendary franchise has not left anyone indifferent with its artistic section, but there is no doubt that the humor of the series will continue to be superb.
We haven’t even been able to play yet and we can already have a few laughs through the title web page. A screen in which two characters are imprisoned appears before us and with various dialogue options. While the first two offer us information about the work, the third will start a totally unexpected conversation.
And it is that Stan, one of the most recurring characters in the Monkey Island games, appears in one of the cells. When we start talking to him, he tells us that he has been taken prisoner for “marketing-related crimes“. The good of Stan tells us that he does not understand anything of what happened, since he simply “did not sell, nothing expendable”.
Of course, this is a clear reference to NFTs and the thinking that Terrible Toybox has about this type of product. Even though we offer Stan help, he prefers not to risk losing his chance for parole. Of course, he will not be able to get rid of the bars, but that does not prevent him from breaking the fourth wall to talk to us.
We cannot forget about Otis, who appeared in the first and fourth games of the saga, although Stan doesn’t blame us if we don’t remember him.. In any case, he cannot speak directly with us. Hopefully the humorous line of Return to Monkey Island continue in this vein when it comes out for PC and Nintendo Switch sometime in 2022.
