As late as April 1st, Ron Gilbert personally hinted at Monkey Island’s comeback, but no one really knew for sure if it was a joke or not. Now it’s clear: one of the cult series of the adventure genre is actually returning!
Ron Gilbert always insisted that he didn’t really believe in jokes on April 1st. This year he finally hinted at a comeback from Monkey Island on the said day, but no one really knew for sure whether he wasn’t making fun of himself at the expense of the adventure fans because of this attitude. Now it’s clear: Gilbert remained true to his attitude to April 1st!
Today Devolver Digital and Lucasfilm Games officially announced the new game Return to Monkey Island. The classic adventure pirate saga is scheduled to return in 2022 with its distinctive humor and should now make fan hearts beat faster.
The announcement via a short teaser clip confirms that Return to Monkey Island will be a direct sequel to Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge. Apart from that, really tangible details about the new adventure part are unfortunately still scarce.
But important for fans: Absolute veterans of the franchise have their fingers in the pie behind the scenes. Responsible for the development is Terrible Toybox, which launched the excellent Thimbleweed Park in 2017. The head of the studio is the aforementioned Ron Gilbert, and he was already instrumental in designing the original games. Dave Grossmann, the writer of the original, is also at his side, which means that the only thing missing from the former triumvirate is Tim Schafer, who now runs his own studio with Double Fine.
And another circumstance makes for joy: Dominic Armato has also been confirmed as the original voice actor for would-be pirate Guybrush Threepwood for the return of the franchise.
When exactly Return to Monkey Island will be released this year and which platforms will be served is not yet known. We’ll keep you up to date!
