It has taken many months for Rick and Morty's season 4 premiere. The mad scientist is already doing his thing in Adult Swim and in his last episode he has done many winks to other science fiction sagas like Star Wars or Alien. But before this, there was a detail that was not overlooked by any viewer. Episode 6 of Rick and Morty pays tribute to The NeverEnding Story in its title: The Rickstoria Intermimorty. But he was still going to connect more with the public, even in his final minutes where he made a subtle reference to coronavirus.
The creators of Rick and Morty are no strangers to the pandemic that affects everyone. The coronavirus is here to stay and there are already anime series that have delayed their publications due to this matter. Eiichiro Oda himself, creator of One Piece, warned of possible future delays by reducing his staff to a minimum to avoid social contact as much as possible. Rick and Morty's episode from last week has gotten in the last minute a gag on consumerism and of course the coronavirus. Towards the end of the episode, Rick tells Morty to buy a new train, because «Nobody is buying because of this damn virus».
The scripts have been written since last year, which suggests that the creators have entered this reference at the last minute. After the first episodes premiere, the second part of the season is already here, so there is no longer an excuse to miss any of them. There is still Rick and Morty for a while.
