Although Gladiator 2 has only been on the billboard for a few weeks, it seems that Ridley Scott is not wasting any time, as he recently announced that he is working on a third installment of the saga. And although these films have their own identity, the director has revealed that there is a great inspiration behind them.
In an interview with USA Todaythe British filmmaker commented that one of the main influences for this iconic saga has been The Godfatherconsidered one of the best franchises of all time and which, according to him, shares several similarities with his productions.
“I took a weekend to reflect on all this, and I realized that, well, I'm stealing Coppola's idea,” Scott confessed. “At the end of The Godfather, you see that Michael doesn't want the job. I love that idea of a man who has inherited a role that he just can't escape. That really fascinates me.”
Although nothing is confirmed yet, everything indicates that the third part of Gladiator could be significantly influenced by The Godfather IIIwhich takes place several decades after the second installment and closes the story of the Corleones. However, it is worth remembering that the last film in Coppola's trilogy had a much more lukewarm reception compared to the first two.
