The untitled genre thriller, co-directed by “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler and actor Michael B. Jordan, is a Hollywood-style vampire movie.
Following last week’s news that the longtime collaborators were reteaming for an original film, the temperature surrounding the package appears to have risen quite a bit. Now, Deadline reports that only Sony, Warner Bros. Discovery Channel, and Universal Pictures are “competing for a deal that would allow Coogler to begin production this summer.”

According to Deadline , the film is supposed to be “a period genre film that is Jordan’s true star effort,” and is said to have a production budget of around $90 million. In smaller letters, we also learn that the film is actually a vampire movie. In addition, “Potential co-ownership of the intellectual property was also discussed, as was the potential ‘dropping’ of images by Coogler and his Proximity Media.”
With Coogler’s massive success with Disney/Marvel’s two “Black Panther” films and his continued efforts as a producer, a big deal with the filmmaker could come to fruition. Stay tuned for more updates on the film in the near future, as the studio seems very confident in its potential.
It could also be a sign that Coogler is done with Marvel Studios — at least in terms of directing future Black Panther films — and is looking to use his influence to push for more original projects. Looking at the chaos in Blade’s pre-production so far and Coogler’s interest in the vampire subgenre, one has to wonder why Marvel hasn’t tried to bring the director on board with the project. Maybe they did, but the ideas didn’t come together well, who knows.
