News culture “Ryan Gosling is nominated for Ken, but Margot Robbie is not nominated for Barbie in…Barbie,” the Oscars are already sparking outrage
While many awards have already been handed out, it’s now time for the Oscars! The Academy has actually announced the films, actors and creators nominated for the ceremony, and one of the decisions is particularly controversial. In fact, Ryan Gosling was nominated for his acting performance, but Margot Robbie was not.
Ken better than Barbie in his own movie?
Last summer, the film Barbie had already caused a real phenomenon before its release. It must be said that it was scheduled to hit theaters on the exact same day as Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s latest film. Enough to amuse many Internet users who had fun putting these two films in competition since their worlds were diametrically opposed. But by the time of their release, both feature films had finally lived up to all expectations and were able to convince their respective audiences. Since then, films by Christopher Nolan and Greta Gerwig have won prestigious awards. Today, however, the Oscar Academy released the list of films in the running for each of its categories, and one of the decisions is already causing controversy.
So Ryan Gosling is nominated for the role of Ken, but Margot Robbie is not nominated for the role of Barbie in…Barbie.
That’s right, the actress who plays Barbie in the film of the same name was not selected by the Oscar Academy, while the actress who plays Ken was. While this isn’t exactly the first time that a supporting actor or actress has stolen the spotlight from a lead actor or actress, the fact that this is happening in a film like “Barbie” raises some issues. In fact, the entire point of the film is feminist in nature, emphasizing the position that men occupy in society to the detriment of women. By nominating Ryan Gosling and not Margot Robbie, the Oscar Academy shows at best a lack of understanding for the film, and at worst that it actively participates in this social injustice. Luckily the actress America Ferrera was still nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her character Gloria. As a reminder, the Barbie movie is in the running to win no less than 8 different Oscars. The full list of nominees by category can be found in this article.
The outrage had already begun in another ceremony
If necessary, wait March 10th In addition to the big winners of the various Oscar categories, numerous ceremonies have already taken place in recent weeks. Among them we particularly mention the Critics Choice Awards et Golden Globeswhere the Barbie film also won some awards. However, Greta Gerwig’s film did not seem to be well understood by the Critics Choice Awards jury either. While the song of Billie Eilish (which perfectly sums up the film’s message) was also named, It was the song “I’m Just Ken” that was rewarded during this ceremony. When it’s obviously very successful, rewarding it instead of what serves the purpose of the film leaves a certain bitter aftertaste. Ryan Gosling, lead singer of the award-winning song, seemed surprised himself to win this statuette.
Luckily, “What Was I Made For” still received the recognition it deserved by winning the Golden Globe for Best Original Song. The two songs are again in contention for the Oscar for Best Original Song, as is “It Never Went Away” (American Symphony), The fire within (Flamin’ Hot) and Wahzhazhe A Song For My People (Flower Moon Killer). It remains to be seen whether history repeats itself on March 10 or whether the winner even goes on to perform one of Barbie’s two songs.
