Remedy is slowly building out its connected universe with games like Alan Wake 2 and Control, but it still wants to make sure each game is enjoyable in its own right.
One of the biggest problems with something like the MCU these days is how much you have to watch to understand the latest entries. A lot of these projects just stand on their own and you have to look at something else to fully appreciate them, which is clearly what Remedy is trying to avoid. Creative director Sam Lake recently spoke with IGN about the Remedy Connected Universe, noting that the developer is “just getting started” and that it's “too early to start talking about the ending.” But he also made it clear that Remedy wanted each game to be enjoyed on its own.

“I love bringing these things together. I love making it deeper and expanding the lore,” Lake explains. “It really feels like an opportunity to take these threads that we've laid out, to expand, to think about different ideas. It feels really exciting. And the way we look at it is, every game needs to be enjoyable in its own right. , but for our fans, for people who have been playing other Remedy games, we want to add a lot of content that allows them to discover the ongoing story of the universe.”

Even though this interconnected universe only really started with Control, you can feel the intention already taking effect – I played Alan Wake after Control and definitely didn't feel like I was missing out. Plus, it inspired me to play Alan Wake, so, Remedy, awesome! Mission accomplished.
Of course, Remedy has a lot on its plate right now. There's Control 2, for example, and there's FBC: Firebreak, a three-player first-person shooter set in the Federal Bureau of Control. Exciting stuff!
