During the last years, rumors have been happening that Scalebound could resume its development at Platinum Games, more now if possible with the Platinum 4 announcements, but since Microsoft denies these theories, the project is dead, at least for now. Scalebound was one of the great promises of Platinum Games within the catalog of exclusive Xbox One games with Hideki Kamiya at the forefront, until it was sadly canceled in 2017 due to a series of disagreements between the Japanese developer and Microsoft.
In a talk on the podcast of IGNPhil Spencer was asked about this fact and the manager did not give rise to speculation, Scalebound will not return, he assured with a pained tone. "Yes, it is difficult," he says. “Because I have a lot of respect for Platnium, (director Hideki Kamiya), the team… and I don't feel bad. And we talk to those guys, there is no animosity between the teams.
According to Spencer, maybe they shouldn't have taught the project so soon. "We tried to do something, and it didn't work", He says. "And I regret being so public about what we are trying to do." That same year, Fable Legends was also canceled under similar circumstances, two projects from which he claims to have learned a lot. "I learned something about Fable Legends, I learned something about Scalebound, about be public about things before you know we have a real credible plan in something I've felt in my hands, "says Spencer.
"We just didn't get there with Scalebound and with the team," Spencer continues. «And I say it for both teams». Atsushi Inaba, director of Platinum Games, also commented last year that Microsoft was not solely responsible for the cancellation of the game and that "both sides failed."
"We loved some of the ideas we were trying to come up with, and obviously we wanted to release a great game to our customers," says Spencer, before clarifying that the game is definitely not in development. «We are not working on itI'm not in Platinum today, but I'm pretty sure they're not working on it. It is something that we have all overcome, and it is not a moment that I see as a great merit for me, having to cancel a game that we had talked about for years ».
