SEGA has registered the trademark “Yakuza Wars” in Japan, which has naturally led to a lot of speculation among fans of the publisher’s long-running and famous series, which stars a couple of Japanese gangsters in smart suits. I’m talking about Ryu Ga Gotoku’s Like A Dragon series, which, let’s not forget, was formerly known as the Yakuza series.

Spotted by Gematsu, the trademark was filed on July 26, and the trademark listing doesn’t offer any clues as to its meaning other than it was applied for by SEGA and is related to video games.

With Sega having yet to announce a game with the Yakuza Wars title or subtitle, and Ryu Ga Gotoku recently revealing that its next game will be a “big surprise” to fans, speculation about who might own Majima’s construction hat is starting to run wild.

The three main theories that seem to be gaining traction on the Like A Dragon Reddit are some kind of crossover between Like A Dragon and another SEGA series, such as Sakura Wars, which got a massive reboot in 2020, a Like A Dragon RTS game, or a Dynasty Warriors-style Yakuza musou game.

And then there’s the obvious question. The idea of a mobile game – possibly with some gacha mechanics – that essentially turns Yakuza 6’s Kiryu Clan battles into an addictive mafia-style game. Imagine commanding Kiryu’s thug unit against rival gangs in a war for the underworld, all from the comfort of your toilet seat. See, this idea might not be as bad as you first thought.

All that said, it’s probably not wise to simply assume that Yakuza Wars is the next RGG game or has any connection to the studio, especially considering the studio has already dropped the word “Yakuza” from the titles of the current Like A Dragon series. In that case, suddenly releasing a game with that name would be a strange turn of events.

So, we’ll just have to wait and see. What do you think Gang Wars will turn out to be like? Let us know below!
