Apple has announced that it will give its users in the EU, including here, more freedom of choice on their iPhones in the future. If you use iOS or iPadOS, you will be able to make more choices for your apps in the future.

As from an announcement by the Californian company As it turns out, you will soon be able to set your default apps yourself via a new setting in the Settings menu called “Default Apps”. This includes apps for phone, messaging, translation, navigation, password manager, keyboards and call spam filtering. Currently, the option to bypass the app set by Apple as the default is only available in the Mail and Browser areas.

Soon you will also be able to delete standard apps

You should also be able to uninstall the standard apps. This is not yet possible because Safari, for example, is an app integrated into the system. However, it is annoying if you prefer to use Chrome or Firefox anyway and this app then just takes up unnecessary storage space. Rumor has it that this was even a counter-argument for some people against buying an iPhone.

By the way: Apple justifies this change by saying that they are in a dialogue with the EU regarding compliance with the requirements of the Digital Markets Act (DMA). This digital law is also the main reason why we will receive Apple’s AI “Apple Intelligence” later in this country – if we get it at all.

Update for “Default Apps” coming by the end of the year

As Apple itself writes, the additional adjustability and removal of standard apps will come to your devices via an update by the end of the year. Users of Apple iOS 18, which the iPhone 16 models will be delivered with, should have this freedom immediately. However, it remains to be seen how many older devices, such as the iPhone 15, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 13, will also receive this freedom of choice.
