Amazon’s Blink cameras require a sync module during setup. But do you have to use it or can you do without it? We’ll tell you.
- When setting up, the Blink cameras first require a sync module
- They can be connected to your WLAN via the device because the cameras themselves do not support WLAN.
- Unfortunately, you cannot use the Blink cameras without the Sync Module.
Under the name Blink, Amazon’s own brand markets affordable security cameras for your home. To control these cameras, Amazon offers the Blink Sync Module, a standalone module that connects to your Blink app via WiFi. You can also use this to save images from your Blink camera locally.
When setting up a Blink camera, you will therefore first be asked to set up a sync module. But is that necessary if you don’t use the local storage option at all?
Blink: The Sync Module is responsible for this
Before we clarify the question of whether the Blink cameras can also be used without the additional module, it should be explained what this module is actually responsible for. Because it offers far more functionality than capturing images on local storage. Basically, this is a technical interface between the cameras and your WLAN.
The cameras connect wirelessly to the module. This in turn is WLAN-capable and can also record the video feeds and save them on a connected USB stick, for example. You can connect up to ten devices with one module.
Setup and use not possible without Sync Module
Unfortunately, it is not actually possible to use the Blink cameras as standalone devices and run them without the Sync Module. This is because the cameras themselves are not WiFi-enabled and cannot connect to your app and smartphone without such a module. Therefore you need this module to operate your Blink cameras.

But there is one exception: The Blink Mini can also be operated as a wired camera without a sync module. However, this model is only suitable for indoor use. As far as we know, all other models require a Sync Module 2.
