Hogwarts Legacy sounds like a Harry Potter fan dream come true: finally going to magic school yourself when Hufflepuff teases the Slytherins (or vice versa), and exploring the countryside around Hogwarts flying on a broomstick or even a Hippogriff to discover ruins and secrets .

But two dark clouds hover over the approaching open-world role-playing game (Hogwarts Legacy will be released on February 10, 2023 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S). One is the controversy surrounding Harry Potter author JK Rowling, including calls for a boycott.

The second cloud concerns the content quality of the game. Because even though we’ve been able to play Hogwarts Legacy for an hour, there are still too many unanswered questions. For example, how meaningful and valuable the open world is really becoming. Whether the main plot boasts interesting decisions and characters. Whether side tasks are limited to mini-games or rattling icons. Whether the built-in animal beings “Farmville” is more than a bonus. Or, or, or.

In the podcast about Hofwarts Legacy we discuss both topics: on the one hand the discussion about Rowling, the boycott calls and how Avalanche Software deals with them, on the other hand our qualitative concerns.

Micha invited Natalie from GameStar and Eleen from GamePro to the podcast, who have already been able to play Hogwarts Legacy (you can find Eleen’s article on GamePro.de). However, only selected, short sections, which is unusual so close to release. Is Avalanche so afraid of spoilers – or afraid that some areas of the game won’t deliver what Harry Potter fans are hoping for?

Of course, Natalie and Eleen also talk about what they liked. The broom flying, for example (apart from braking), the surprisingly entertaining fights or the Hogwarts itself, which has been implemented with a noticeably great love of detail. You can tell that a lot of work has gone into Hogwarts Legacy.

But only in the areas that we have been able to see so far. And not everywhere there either…

Well, or less briefly and concisely, when Micha has to defend himself against Géraldine’s infamous vampire accusations.
