Sonic 2 the movie in brief
Sonic 2 the movie (Sonic the Hedgehog 2 from its original title) is the direct sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog which was released in February 2020. SEGA’s second Blue Hedgehog adventure will once again be directed by Jeff Fowler and written by trio Pat Casey, Josh Miller and John Whittington. The role of Sonic goes to Ben Schwartz, while Colleen O’Shaughnessey and Idris Elba will lend their voices to Miles “Tails” Prower and Knuckles, respectively. Finally, Jim Carrey and James Warden return as Dr. Ivo Robotnik (aka Eggman) and Tom.
In this sequel, Sonic spends peaceful days in the small town of Green Hills, but the wild hedgehog aspires to become a true hero, which does not fail the life of the young teenager and his guardian Tom. The Return of Dr. Robotnik to Earth, accompanied by his new ally Knuckles, urges Sonic to intervene and team up with Tails, a two-tailed fox, in hopes of thwarting the Machiavellian genius’ plans. The latter intends to steal the Emerald of Chaos, whose power in the universe is immeasurable.
The Sonic’matic universe
The first Sonic was unexpectedly a good surprise when it was released in French cinemas on February 9th, 2020. It has to be said that the film, directed by Jeff Fowler, has come a long way after fans scathingly criticized the design of the SEGA mascot. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, Sonic the Movie was a box office success with $306.8 million. The Paramount company has therefore decided to rely on the supersonic hedgehog and to bring its own universe to the cinema.
Sonic will be rewarded with a trilogy of films even before the second film is released in our territory for March 30th, 2022. The lore has many characters just waiting to steal the show from Sonic. The latter is joined by Miles “Tails” Prower and Knuckles for his second adventure on the big screen, and SEGA’s lore has many heroes to add, starting with the sinister Shadow. This film trilogy isn’t the only project Paramount has started.
A film adaptation worthy of video games?
Sonic 2 picks up on the winning formula of the first installment and pushes all the sliders one or even two levels further. Sonic the Movie aimed primarily at kids – young and old – with its comedy-adventure take on the SEGA universe and light-hearted tone that elicits genuine smiles. After all, supported by a skillful wink, he managed to tickle the nostalgic fiber of the fans, especially those of the Mega Drive era. This second opus does the same, putting the means on the table to produce a feature film with heightened ambition.
The action scenes, much more numerous and epic than before, highlight the supernatural abilities of our heroes. Between the speed of Sonic, the ingenuity of Tails and the destructive power of Knuckles, the clashes take on a whole new dimension. Speaking of characters, The interpretations by Ben Schwartz, Colleen O’Shaughnessey and especially Idris Elba stand out.
Jim Carrey is masterful as always in the role of Dr. robotnik. The American-Canadian actor shines like never before and lights up the feature film, directed by Jeff Fowler, with his unlikely moustache. If you’re a natural fan of the excessive performances of the man who has been The Mask and Ace Ventura in the past, you’ll be well served. He thus gives the answer to believable creatures whose integration is quality most of the time. Some interactions with flesh-and-blood creatures might be a little surprising, but overall the production did everything possible to bring these fictional characters “alive” in computer-generated imagery.
Sonic 2 for the double adventure. This new film adaptation aims to appeal to both video game fans and children of all ages who want to get away from it all for two hours.
