Sonic 3’s producers say it “borrows a lot from Sonic Adventure 2,” so I have to ask: What’s going to happen to that 12-year-old kid?

I can’t believe I have to write this, but I thought there might be spoilers for Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic 3?

Sonic fans everywhere cheered when the very short first trailer for Sonic 3 was released, as it featured an orchestral rendition of Sonic Adventure 2’s theme song, “Live and Learn.” Fans have been craving some Adventure Age nods, and obviously, with the introduction of Shadow, it was always going to borrow something from it. As shared in a new interview with GamesRadar, Sonic 3 producer and Knuckles showrunner Toby Ascher talked about the upcoming film and how it draws from Sonic Adventure 2″.

“It’s going to be a huge, fun, incredible movie that obviously draws a lot from Sonic Adventure 2 and some of the games that I know the core Sonic team grew up loving,” Asher said . Of course, this leaves one important question: Will they kill Maria, a real 12-year-old like they do in the game? To give non-Sonic fans some context, in Sonic Adventure 2 it was hinted that Eggman’s cousin Maria (who was with me) died after sending Shadow (her best friend) to Earth. In Shadow’s 2001 game, it’s explained that she was actually shot, which is also shown in the Sonic X anime, although both anime were censored, which isn’t surprising.

Obviously, it’s confusing and not very kid-friendly, so you have to assume that when Asher says Sonic Adventure 2 “takes a lot,” that doesn’t mean everything. We won’t know what their plans are for Maria until the movie actually hits theaters on December 20th (they’re casting an actual child in the movie for an undisclosed role, so she’ll likely appear), but at least we know about Shadow Will be voiced by real-life ultimate being Keanu Reeves.
