From all appearances, the survival horror title Sons of the Forest would have been another candidate for a postponement, but now the developers have come up with something else.
But horror survival fans were lucky … or not. Actually, Sons of the Forest was supposed to be released on February 23rd, but a postponement was apparently more than likely because the developers still had a few things in the drawer that should come into play.
Instead of postponing the game, the studio has now decided to keep the date of February 23, but then not officially launch the game, but go into early access. In other words, you are presented with an unfinished version, but you still have the opportunity to influence it with your feedback.
A statement on Steam reads: “It’s been a long journey since we started development on Sons of The Forest and it has grown into the biggest and most complex game we’ve ever made. There’s still so much we want to add: items, new mechanics, game balance and much more. We didn’t want to postpone the game again and instead decided to involve the community in the further development of the project and keep February 23rd as the release date, but to release in Early Access instead.”
According to the developers, the Early Access version is playable in both single player and multiplayer mode with up to 8 players. There are caves to explore, a story to uncover, a brand new building system, a crafting system, a new arsenal of weapons, dynamic weather and seasons, fearsome enemies, and much more. The duration of Early Access is currently estimated at six to eight months.
According to the developers, the success of the predecessor The Forest from 2014 was mainly due to the community, their suggestions and feedback and error reports, and apparently this line is now to be continued with the successor. The fact that the early access release means that fresh funds are flowing into the developer’s coffers through the income is certainly also helpful.
