Sony finally decided that it was time to uncover its new generation console, through a conference initially intended for the canceled GDC 2020, the engineer Mark Cerny outlined the final specifications of the PlayStation 5 and the hardware peculiarities that will make it unique against its competition. There was also room to discuss new features, such as the requested backward compatibility that will only take place with PS4 and the number of compatible titles will gradually grow.
«We recently took a look to the 100 best PS4 titles ranked by game time, and we expect almost all of them to be playable at launch on PS5, "says Hideaki Nishino, Sony executive, in a post in the PlayStation blog
In this sense, Sony seems to have adopted a strategy similar to that of Microsoft when it started its backward compatibility service on Xbox One, do it via software thanks to specific ways, and not through the PS4 chip itself
This means that backwards compatibility of games it will be slower and more expensive because each game has to be individually tested. "The momentum is really huge this time, and some game codes just can't handle it," says Cerny, so not all PS4 games will be playable on PS5.
With Jim Ryan's famous words belittling Microsoft's backward compatibility service in mind, regarding Sony's commitment to this matter, Cerny clarifies that it won't happen like 2006, when PlayStation 3 was released with the possibility of playing PS2 games and soon the function was withdrawn. Once the backward compatibility is in the console, it's in. It is not as if for a small price it removed backward compatibility as it did on PlayStation 3. »
PlayStration 5 will hit stores later this year, but its price and final design remain to be known, the design of its remote could have leaked already.
