sony expect Microsoft Keep Activision BlizzardThe roster of games is available at game station platform. In a new statement to The Wall Street Journal, a spokesperson for the company noted: “We expect Microsoft to abide by contractual agreements and continue to ensure that Activision games are multi-platform.”
Since the blockbuster news of Microsoft’s planned acquisition of Activision Blizzard, a burning question on players’ minds has been the status of Call of Duty: Will Microsoft remove it from the PlayStation entirely? Will only Warzone, as an existing community, remain on the PlayStation platform? Overall, despite the acquisition plans, won’t anything actually change?
Of course, Sony’s announcement isn’t just for the Call of Duty franchise. Overwatch, Spyro the Dragon, Crash Bandicoot, Diablo, Tony Hawk, and more are all part of the deal. Sony’s first official statement on the matter prompted Microsoft to remember ActiBlizz’s contractual obligations, and we’re assuming something happens that means we’ll see the company’s games still on PlayStation — at least in the short term.
It’s also not the first time Microsoft has complied with pre-existing contractual agreements. When the Xbox owner announced its acquisition of Bethesda’s parent company Zenimax in 2020, both Arkane’s Deathloop and Tango Gameworks’ Ghostwire: Tokyo were confirmed to remain PS5 exclusives. That didn’t stop Microsoft from claiming Bethesda’s sci-fi RPG Starfield after a while, though.
There’s still a lot we don’t know about how this acquisition will emerge. It still needs to pass market regulators first. Sony’s initial — potential damage control — statement addressed some fans’ major concerns, but everyone still has a lot of questions about how this all works.
We’ve published a list of the dream games we’d like to see from this acquisition, from World’s Edge’s new Warcraft RTS to Tim Schafer’s Spyro the Dragon, which you can read now!
