For some time now, PS4 or PS5 users have been able to play their games on a mobile device through the remote play system. To improve gaming comfort on a smartphone, players can also connect a PlayStation controller via Bluetooth. But according to new elements, Sony wants to go even further on the mobile gaming side.
Sony recently patented a controller for mobile gaming. As reported by the British side VGC, it is apparently a controller that should be attached to each side of a smartphone. The Japanese subsidiary of Sony Interactive Entertainment can be traced back a priori to the initiative of this patent. Official document released just last week.
The diagram attached to this patent shows that this lever therefore corresponds to two handles. As is usual with this type of product, these grips are to be attached to each side of the smartphone. Note that the mobile device controller seen on the patent takes on the appearance of a DualShock 4 again.
Mobile gaming, a new challenge for Sony?
At the moment, of course, it is only a diagram. It would have been less surprising if Sony had used the PS5’s DualSense controller as a base. However, it is possible that this mobile controller does not have the functionality of the DualSense. So this would explain that. But to be sure, we have to wait for a possible announcement.
Note that, as VGC points out, the patent also mentions a “handle” that is not on the diagram. The latter would be used for motion detection. The description of the patent indicates that this handle marks the direction of inclination as well as the angle of movement.
A Swiss Army Knife PlayStation Mobile Controller
If such an accessory is marketed for playing on a mobile device, the question of the types of use arises. It would make sense to use it to play PS4 and PS5 games via remote play. On paper, it could also be used to play games via the cloud. Sony could, for example, choose to offer PlayStation Now on smartphones and tablets.
This PlayStation controller for smartphones could also be used for future Sony mobile games. As a reminder, the Japanese giant announced its intention to convert its most popular licenses into mobile games earlier this year. Such an accessory would make it possible to play more comfortably on this platform. Now we have to wait for an official announcement or major leak to find out what Sony is up to here.
