Above all, Microsoft is getting more and more first-party studios to develop exclusive titles for the Xbox. Sony often countered, albeit to a lesser extent – but now there is even a closure to report.
Sony PlayStation is losing one of its first-party studios, which has now been via Twitter known. The PixelOpus studio concerned spoke up there and confirmed the final line, although the concrete background behind this step is left open and no further comments are made.
PixelOpus was originally established in 2014 as Sony Interactive Entertainment’s in-house studio, since then it has been dedicated to PlayStation-exclusive titles. However, since its debut, PixelOpus has also only released two games, namely Entwined and Concrete Genie.
In this respect, the step may not come as a surprise, because the bottom line is that PixelOpus started as a smaller team dedicated to the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PS Vita. The fact that PixelOpus had actually developed a new PS5 title, but it was apparently discontinued in the course of this, still causes some astonishment.
While the studio thanked the numerous players for their support, Sony has not yet commented on the closure. Fans reacted to the studio’s announcement and expressed their disappointment. Meanwhile, Sony seems to be making cuts here and there, because Studio Japan, which is responsible for Knack, among other things, has recently been realigned.
