Sony Decided to continue to allow Cross play in Game console The platform for the coming months and years.
In an interview with Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Axios, Jim Ryan said that Sony hopes to have more cross-platform multiplayer games in future games and praised the company’s cross-platform gaming approach so far.
“We support and encourage cross-platform games,” he said when talking about the popularity of cross-platform games in Fortnite, Call of Duty, Rocket League, Minecraft and other games.
According to Ryan, as more and more games leap from closed player ecosystems to more interconnected solutions, “the numbers will continue to grow.”
This situation is contrary to what we have heard from other companies in the past. In the past, Sony has been a reluctant party in cross-play support.
Just in May 2021, we heard that the cross-platform game of Borderlands 3 was blocked on PlayStation consoles. Gearbox President and CEO Randy Pitchford (Randy Pitchford) said that Sony prevented the game from being cross-played on the grounds of certification. At about the same time, Epic and Apple’s lawsuit indicated that Epic Games paid Sony for the privilege of bringing cross-platform games to Fortnite.
Jim Ryan declined to clarify what happened in this specific example, noting that he did not want to comment on “real-time business issues with long-term partners” and that “our policy is consistent across all publishers.” Curious.
Sony finally allowed cross-play on its platforms in 2018, and many multiplayer games have since rolled out this feature on all platforms. However, this is not easy. Sony received a lot of criticism in the years before it changed its mind because it was the only company that opposed cross-platform multiplayer games.
Before Shawn Layden, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America, revealed in June of that year that it was working on a solution, the company was repeatedly called upon by fans and competitors.
It’s great to see the company admit that it is ultimately a customer-friendly success, and it’s great to know that Sony will not obviously insist on cross-playing in the future.
