A new report states that Sony will ask some developers to make limited-time demos for any games that cost $34/$33/¥4,000 or more.
This will see subscribers PlayStation Plus Premium Receive demos of all major titles.
According to sources who spoke with Game Developer, studios making lower-cost games will not need to create trial versions.
The report states that developers were not formally informed of the new policy, but rather came from an update to Sony’s developer portal.
Under the new policy, that means studios developing upcoming games will need to put in the budget, effort and time to create these trials. The new requirements are not retroactive and do not apply to VR games.
The developer will offer timed trials to PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers for three months after launch on the PlayStation Store, and must be available to users within 12 months.
If studios wish to create custom demos for the layer, Sony has the option, but such demos require approval on a case-by-case basis.
Developers can still offer custom demos, free weekends, and limited game trials available to all PlayStation owners.
When asked about the new policy, Sony did not reply to game developers as of press time.
At launch, PlayStation Plus Premium will include all the benefits you get from the current PlayStation Plus, plus a library of 400 PS4 and PS5 games that can be downloaded to your console. It also adds classic games from PS1, PS2 and PSP, limited-time game trials and PS3/PS4 game streaming.
This service level will set you back $17.99/$16.99/£13.49 per month, $49.99/$49.99/£39.99 for three months, or $119.99/$119.99/£99.99 per year.
The revamped PlayStation Plus service launches in the Americas on June 13 and in Europe on June 22.
