The information points in the same direction. Both from AMD, Nvidia or Intel they think in the same way: the component shortage it will stay with us until 2023, at least. Even Phil Spencer has recognized that the situation is not the most favorable for any member of the industry.
In this situation, the new generation consoles must deal, be they PS5 or Xbox Series. Thanks to the information revealed by Bloomberg, we have been able to know that Sony will continue its PS4 production to mitigate the lack of PS5 stock.
The sources consulted by the media point out that Sony’s initial idea was to end the assembly of PS4 at the end of 2021 and now the change has been radical. Not only will more PS4s arrive in stores, but the Japanese company’s strategy is manufacture a million more units to compensate for the low presence of PS5 in stores.
This is due to the fact that the old console uses less advanced chips, its manufacture is much simpler and it is clearly cheaper than PS5. A Sony spokesperson confirmed to Bloomberg that production of the system would remain in 2022, as “It is one of the best-selling consoles in history. and there is always a crossing between generations”.
They assure from internal sources that this approach allows Sony to keep players within the PlayStation ecosystem. Currently, PS5 production is slowed down due to chip-related bottlenecks used for functions such as audio, power, and wireless communication.
Possibilities have been considered among console manufacturers such as offering a higher price, but it has been dismissed since all current production has been sold. Meanwhile, Sony has already left us some of the first details of PSVR2, its virtual reality device that will come to PS5.
