Sony said it doesn’t plan to release its PlayStation-exclusive games to its revamped PlayStation Plus service on day one.
In an interview with GI.biz, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan said the reason has to do with how the company currently releases games.
“We feel like we’re in a good virtuous cycle with studios that invest in success, which allows more investment to bring more success,” Ryan said. “We love the cycle and we think our players love it.
“[In terms of] Putting our own games or any of our services into this service at launch…as we all know, that’s not the way we used to go. This is not the path we’re going to take with this new service. We felt that if we did that with the games we make at PlayStation Studios, that virtuous cycle would be broken.
“The level of investment we need in the studio is impossible, and we don’t think the knock-on effect on the quality of the games we make is going to be what gamers want.”
However, nothing is set in stone, according to Ryan, who said it’s just the approach the company is taking “in the short term.”
“The way our publishing model currently works doesn’t make any sense. But as we all know, things can change very quickly in this industry,” he said.
Earlier today, Sony announced PS Plus Essentials, PS Plus Extra, and PS Plus Premium, its three-tier subscription service, and its answer to Xbox Game Pass.
