A lot is happening in the battered graphics card market this year. The prices are still high, despite a certain tendency towards improvement, but supplies of new models will be available soon and in the course of the year.
For the first time we have three major manufacturers of desktop graphics cards, as Intel will compete with the long-established top dogs Nvidia and AMD and all three manufacturers are planning some releases this year. This applies to completely new models as well as to extensions of the current generations, as our outlook shows.
Intel’s cards appear in the second quarter
According to its own statements, the graphics card newcomer from Intel will release its first desktop models in the second quarter of this year, i.e. from April to June. However, we don’t yet know exactly which cards will be available.
According to rumours, however, Intel will not yet attack the high-end segment with the first generation. The most powerful graphics card should probably be called Arc A780 and be at the performance level of Nvidia’s RTX 3070.
Available graphics card: RX 6500XT
In addition, Intel should also serve the entry-level segment with the models A350 and A380. These are probably comparable to the performance of an Nvidia RTX 3050. The exact performance of the Intel cards is also dependent on the software in the form of drivers, which could tip the scales.
Nvidia: flagship in March, new generation later in 2022
For Nvidia, the first thing to say is: high-end ahead! The RTX 3070 Ti with 16 GB of memory and the RTX 3090 Ti were originally supposed to appear in March. According to an entry in Chinese Chiphell forum the new edition of the RTX 3070 Ti with more memory was canceled.
That leaves the release of the RTX 3090 Ti. The performance monster was apparently struggling with technical problems, which is why the release was postponed. According to the rumor mill, the new date is now March 29, 2022. However, the RTX 3090 Ti will probably not be a card for the mass market.
Then later this year we expect the release of the new generation of Nvidia in the form of the RTX 4000 cards. According to the first rumors, the real memory monster could become:
Next RTX 4000 leak
Nvidia could beat AMD at its own game
However, we do not yet know exactly when the cards will appear. We expect the new generation towards the end of the year.
AMD: Refresh soon, big leap in performance at the end of 2022?
AMD is said to be planning an upgrade of the current generation, which will equip a total of three current AMD cards with more and faster memory. These will be upgraded from 16 Gbps to 18 Gbps DDR6 memory, which could mean a performance boost in the low single-digit percentage range.
Accordingly, we expect the Radeon RX 6950XT as the top model, plus the RX 6750XT and RX 6650XT, among other things as competition for the new graphics cards from Intel. However, only the RX 6950XT should appear in April, the release date of the other two cards is still unknown.
Just like Nvidia, AMD is also planning to release a new graphics card generation later this year. AMD has already officially confirmed this, AMD’s CEO Dr. Lisa Su but not named. You can find all the details here:

Big Radeon performance leap confirmed for 2022
According to rumors, AMD’s RX-7000 cards could even overtake the new generation of Nvidia in terms of performance. The so-called chiplet design should make it possible. In short, several chips are installed on a single graphics card, which theoretically allows more performance, provided that the communication between the chips is solved well.
Regardless of whether all these models will really appear and if so when exactly, the big question will be how expensive they are and what the availability is like. You can also find more information about the latest price development in the GPU area and new cards here:
Are you looking forward to a larger selection in the graphics card market? And are you currently or in the medium term looking for a suitable new card or are factors such as the high prices preventing you from making a purchase anyway? Let us know in the comments.
