Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire performed very well at the box office, but Adam Wingard will reportedly not be returning for the next installment.
Clearly, audiences just love big monster showdowns, as earlier this week, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire passed $563 million at the box office, taking the top spot on the MonsterVerse charts (Kong: Skull Island took the top spot with $568 million). But money isn’t everything, as The Hollywood Reporter claims that Wingard won’t be returning for a sequel, despite his interest in telling more stories in this world. That’s apparently because Wingard is now directing A24 project Onslaught, an action-thriller that he’ll be teaming up with his regular working partner Simon Barrett (they made You’re Next and The Guest together).

The Hollywood Reporter claims that as Wingard prepares to shoot the next film, this does not fit in with Legendary’s plans to quickly move on to another film in its MonsterVerse. It was previously revealed that Wingard would no longer be directing the next film, with the sequel being directed by Dave Callaham, who is best known for his work as the screenwriter of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and co-writer of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Now, according to THR’s sources, the split between Wingard and Legendary has become official. This obviously leaves Legendary in the position of having to find a new director, but if it hopes to move quickly, it may not be long before someone comes on board.

That doesn’t mean Godzilla vs. Kong is a bad thing — Fran notes that while it could still help “all the chaos feel more tangible” with “some underlying drama and mayhem,” I can’t help but marvel This is a near-perfect distillation of Godzilla’s zany and more fantastical adventures, and the evolution of King Kong as an action hero from the ’80s King Arthur journey. ” When it comes to giant monster movies these days, there’s something for everyone.
