It’s been just over a week since Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 opened its doors to all players. Some of us were able to play early with Early Access. I’ve spent enough hours dismembering enemies, exploring the three available planets, and talking to other players about what content we’d like to see in the future.
Saber Interactive has presented a roadmap before the game’s launch, so we can already get an idea of everything that will be coming throughout 2024 and 2025: new operations, another difficulty, more enemies, PVP modes and arenas, some new weapons, new enemies and more. Not to mention the horde mode.
That’s a lot of content, but we players always want a little bit more. For that reason, here are five more things I’d like to see in Warhammer 40.000: Space Marine 2 and they are not part of Saber Interactive’s work plan, at least not as much as I would like.
The legend of Titus and other stories to tell
While Operations and PVP are very fun attractions for the endgame, for me the campaign is the main and unmissable show of Space Marine 2The campaign does not have 6-7 missions with different lengths and the ending is quite open to continue.
If I could only ask Saber Interactive for one thing, it would be to continue expanding the campaign missions with new stories featuring Titus and other famous Space Marines. But we shouldn’t just stick with the same old ones.
Oliver Hollis-Leick, the game’s creative director, has said that he would love to tell the story of the Chaos Space Marines, who belong to the Forces of Chaos faction. It would be amazing if Saber Interactive would expand the campaign of Space Marine 2 this way, either showing the Chaos perspective in the game’s story or bringing a completely different one. In any case, more stories and missions this way.
New Races and Factions: Beyond the Forces of Chaos and the Tyranids
The universe of Warhammer 40k and Warhammer Fantasy are much richer than what we have seen in Space Marine 2The Imperium, the Forces of Chaos, and the Tyranids are not the only races or factions populating the universe. In fact, some players have already found evidence that other factions could be on the way… or arriving in a sequel.
Saber Interactive’s roadmap has given players hope by including “New Enemies” in Seasons 2, 3, and 4. Most likely, this refers to new enemy types for the Forces of Chaos and the Tyranids, but we’re here to dream without restraint.
Many long-time fans have longed for the arrival of the Necrons, undead metallic warriors created from the Necrotyr race. And it is not for nothing, but they have found different clues on the maps of Space Marine 2 indicating the presence of this faction. Below you can see two screenshots taken by fans.
Another faction that other players want to see in Space Marine 2 are the Orks, with the Tau and Eldar relegated to mere mentions. Personally, I’d like to see at least one more faction, and I think the Necrons would fit in nicely with the action in the game… which is a fancy way of saying it would be cool to break them up with executions. It would be interesting to introduce them through campaign missions with new stories and then exploit them in Operations mode, but perhaps that’s asking too much.
New weapons for the Space Marines
I’m cheating a little bit here because Saber Interactive has announced new weapons on the roadmap, but I’m taking advantage of the small loophole that they haven’t said which ones. I’m sure it won’t come as a surprise to you to know that Space Marine 2 It doesn’t show all the weapons from the vast Warhammer universe. It does feature the main ones, but there are many more that I would like to wield in a game.
Warhammer weapons vary by faction and soldier type. There are some pretty crazy weapons, from classic dueling pistols to iconic ones with names of their own. Any of them would do, but I have to admit that I’m particularly excited about the rotary machine guns, flamethrowers, and different types of melee weapons, such as sabres and axes of all kinds, including a chain axe. The latter is pretty crazy. There are also all kinds of rocket launchers, mortars, and artillery weapons. Saber Interactive has plenty to choose from.
In any case, I don’t expect them to introduce new weapons in large numbers, because each one has its own development and skill trees, which include its own skins. It’s not as simple as making a weapon, giving it stats and just putting it in.
New classes and roles for Operations
The absence of new classes for Operations modes and PVP arenas has been the most talked about absence by players. It is true that Space Marine 2 currently has six classes, each with its own progression: unique abilities, skill trees, and customizable unique armor. In other words, adding a new class would require a lot of work.
I don’t know as much of the Warhammer 40k universe as I’d like to make much of this point, but my conversations with several veterans have clarified my desires for at least one new class: the Apothecaries, which is the medical division of the Space Marines. “They are combat surgeons that are usually found in almost all Space Marine Command Squads and Primaris Space Marines,” says their description on wiki.
The healer class is the only thing missing from the class system. Space Marine 2 to consider it complete. There are tanks like the Bastion and the Heavy (which also buff allies) and DPS to cover all distances, from Vanguard and Assault for short distances to the Sniper for long distances. The only thing missing are the Apothecaries to add a bit of survivability in missions.
Raid mode for six players
I think it’s an incredible step towards evolution. Warhammer 40.000: Space Marine 2 This would be to include more complex missions for six players, doubling the usual number in Operations. Or to put it another way: Raids. The easy thing would be to take the structure of Operations and make everything bigger, more numerous and longer, but I can think of a much more interesting structure.
Operations are missions that take place at the same time as the main campaign missions. A six-player Raid could consist of doing this simultaneously. Two squads must complete separate objectives to advance, eventually meeting up to complete common objectives: resist waves, defeat a boss, or complete a coordination/skill puzzle. Something accessible to everyone, but requiring a bit more difficulty and knowledge of the mission.
