Tourists will soon be able to ascend to the edge of space in a balloon gondola and admire the curvature of the Earth. The test flight has now been successful.
We have been following the plans of the Florida-based company Space Perspective for four years now. The ambitious plan is to take tourists in a glass gondola up to a height of 30,480 meters.
After Space Perspective recently published pictures of the luxurious interior of the gondola and interested parties were already able to buy tickets for the first rides, there is now another milestone to report.
Space Perspective – Pictures of the interior
After all, Space Perspective had to prove that the unprecedented undertaking would work. Last week, a test flight of the balloon, including the gondola and splashdown on the sea, took place. With this test, the company is showing its notice
This flight successfully demonstrates the “extraordinary accessibility of Spaceship Neptune’s spaceflight experience with its gentle ascent, descent and water landing, a critical step in opening space to more people than ever before,” it says.
At an altitude of 100,000 feet, Spaceship Neptune, as the eight-person gondola at the end of the balloon is called, will reach the beginning of space. Passengers will then be able to see about 450 miles in every direction, watch the sunrise, or perhaps catch a glimpse of NASA’s solar sail.
Interested? Ticket prices are around $125,000. The first dates for the balloon ride are already fully booked.
