Good news, people in their 30s or older, a new Space Balls is in development, and it even has Mel Brooks involved.
Most of you youngsters probably haven’t heard of Spaceballs, but that’s okay, I’m here to tell you. The movie originally came out in 1987 and was primarily a spoof of the original Star Wars trilogy, though references also extended to other big pop culture franchises of the time, like Alien, Planet of the Apes, and Transformers. Now, Amazon MGM Studios is developing a sequel, and it looks like Josh Gad will be starring in the title role (via Variety). He’s also serving as a producer on the film, with the original director Brooks also serving as a producer.

As for the rest of the cast, Josh Greenbaum will direct, having previously directed Come Home and Fresh Off the Boat. Benjy Samit and Dan Hernandez co-wrote the script with Gad, and Kevin Salter is executive producing. Obviously, it’s still early days and plot details are still under wraps, but to be honest, I don’t think spoilers for the Spaceballs sequel are a major concern right now.
Samit and Hernandez have worked together on a number of projects over the years, having written for films such as Detective Pikachu and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. Both of these films were heavy on comedy, so it sounds like a Spaceballs sequel would be well-served, but only time will tell how it pans out. Gad himself is no stranger to comedy either, having starred in the Broadway musical The Book of Mormon and voicing Olaf in Frozen.
There’s no release date for the Spaceballs sequel either, so you’ll just have to be patient and wait.
