After years of working quietly, Mountaintop Studios—a team comprised of game development veterans from Respawn, Riot Games, Bungie, and other AAA studios—has officially unveiled its first project to the world.
Spectre Divide is the team’s attempt to shake up the competitive tactical shooter genre. The free-to-play 3v3 game may borrow elements from Valorant and Counter-Strike, but it puts a completely unique spin on the action games many of us are familiar with.

The main mechanic of Spectre Divide is Duality, where each player can control two bodies at the same time. You can switch between them at any time, giving you a wide range of tactical and practical options to try.
It also acts as a second chance mechanic, giving each player two lives per match. You can implant a corpse (ghost) to cover yourself or make dangerous traversals, or simply use it to monitor two locations at once.
The duality is especially useful given Spectre Divide’s core attack/defense bomb defusing game mode, as you can be at two bomb locations at once. From a shooter perspective, Spectre Divide’s mechanics build on the familiar weapon spray pattern, but you’re also encouraged to aim down your weapon’s sights and shoot on the move.
Instead of picking from pre-made heroes, you can create your own heroes in the game’s fictional Santai match. In addition to appearance, there are a range of skills to choose from to suit any play style you have. There are no ultimates here, but the pre-round purchase phase will definitely be familiar to players of Valorant and Counter-Strike.
Spectre Divide is designed to be a competitive shooter, as evidenced by the involvement of streamer Michael ‘Shroud’ Grzesiek. The game is heavily ranked, with weekly matches against friends – but you can also queue up solo or create custom games.
While the game is free to play, you won’t find any loot boxes here. You can purchase character and weapon skins directly. Sponsors, which are basically factions/manufacturers that are versions of the game, can also be purchased, or you can unlock them by playing the game.
Spectre Divide doesn’t have a release date yet, but it’s expected to be released on PC this year. Now that it’s officially out, you can sign up for future beta tests if you’re interested in experiencing its wild take on the genre for yourself.
