Even if the work Dune was of course very well known before Villeneuve’s filming, it was still a big spotlight. Enough to whet your appetite for a video game on the subject. Explanations.
Writer Frank Herbert’s work is world famous, but Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 film was a great opportunity to put Dune back in the spotlight. The license has definitely been on the rise since we learned of the existence of Dune: Spice Wars, a 4X made by the French from Shiro Games.
Dune: A perfect universe for 4X
Sébastien Vidal, CEO de Shiro explains:
I think I speak for everyone at Shiro Games when I say that we are all huge fans of Dune, be it the original novel or the spectacular new film by Denis Villeneuve. To be able to bring this universe back to life in the form of a strategy game is incredible..
The universe of Dune is the perfect setting for a strategy game. You have large factions like House Atreides and House Harkonnen whose rivalry goes back centuries. There are political intrigues, deceptions and wars, all of which focus on what is by far the most precious substance in the universe: the spice. And then there’s the scene itself, Arrakis, a hostile planet full of hidden wonders to explore. Giant sandworms that can devour entire armies, sandstorms, spice cutters, all of which have been incorporated into this game by our great development team..
The war of the spices
Dune: Spice Wars should therefore include multiple playable factions that 4X requires, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. If we don’t yet know what the title will look like in detail, we know that some goals to win can obviously be played on the control of the spice on Arrakis. The game should include political, economic and military victories. 4X for eXplore, eXpand, eXploit and eXterminate. Do not forget.
The game will be available for early access at PC via Steam in early 2022.
