StudioCanal is planning to bring the Avengers – as the famous spies, rather than the superheroes we’ve been complaining about – back to TV, with a new reboot currently in active development.
The surprising news comes via Deadline , which claims that Studio Canal (current owner of the Avengers catalog) has even lined up a new film from Mickey Twain and Conrad Kay (HBO/BBC’s “Industry”) wrote the pilot episode, ready to shoot. Sex Education director Ben Taylor also appears to have been tapped to direct and executive produce.

The show ran for 161 episodes and eventually spawned a short-lived sequel, New Avengers. The series initially focused on David Keir (Ian Hendry), who was aided by John Steed (Patrick Macnee). If you’re old enough, you probably remember the 1998 movie starring Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman, which was a huge flop that most fans still refuse to acknowledge. It’s no wonder the Avengers IP has been dead for so long, as cool as old-school spy stories with a sci-fi twist are. Which begs the question: Do enough people care about this topic when James Bond and Ethan Hunt are the only two consistently profitable characters in the genre?
