WIT Studio is back with another exciting project, this time a brand new anime adaptation Yaba.
While WIT Studio may be a relatively new studio compared to some of the other big names, it’s already proven itself with big projects like Spy x Family and Suicide Squad Isekai, not to mention the opening and 2D cutscenes for Persona 3 Reload. Now they’re back with another classic, Yaiba, a series that tells the story of the eponymous character, Yaiba Kurogane, a young samurai inspired by real-world samurai Miyamoto Musashi. If you watched the trailer below and thought “hmm, I vaguely recognize that style,” that’s because the anime is based on a manga by Gosho Aoyama, best known for the long-running Cased Closed series (also known as Detective Conan).
The first trailer is quite short, about 30 seconds, but honestly, it looks really fun and expressive in that short time. The series is directed by Takahiro Hasui, who previously served as episode director for Psycho Psycho 100 and Bungo Stray Dogs, while Yoshimichi Kameda, the chief animation director of Inu-Oh, serves as character designer and chief animation director.

This isn’t actually the first time the manga has been adapted into an anime. Back in 1993, the manga was adapted into an anime that aired a total of 52 episodes, and nearly every Pokémon movie has been directed by Yuyama Kunihiko. In terms of the cast, Edogawa Conan is actually voicing the main character, Yaiba, reprising her role from the original series (she was also married to Aoyama for a few years, though their relationship seems to be fine after the divorce). Iwami Aika (Shinobi’s Children) will play Mine Sayaka in this version, and Hosoya Yoshimasa (My Hero Academia, Psycho Psycho 100) will play Onimaru Takeshi.
There is currently no release date for the new version of Yaiba, so stay tuned if you are interested.
This isn’t the only anime remake WIT Studio is working on either, it’s also working on one of the iconic series, One Piece.
