Difficult times for Square Enix: After the servers of the RPG flop Babylon’s Fall with perhaps the saddest patch notes of all time were shut down this week, there’s already the next bang.
After the glossy role-playing game Forspoken failed with players and the press, publisher Square Enix is taking tough action. The responsible development studio Luminous Productions is broken up.
Out for Forspoken developers after bad reviews
What happened? Luminous Productions was founded in 2018 with the goal of creating AAA games that should combine technology and art. The first result was Forspoken, a visually opulent but otherwise unconvincing debut.
The role-playing game had to take a lot of criticism from both the press and the players on Steam – in the GameStar test there was also criticism for technology and story:
Just a month after the release, publisher Square Enix is now apparently taking the consequences: As Luminous Productions announced on Twitter, the developer studio will be broken up on May 1, 2023.
But the employees already have a new home. They will be working directly with developer Square Enix going forward new, innovative gaming experiences for players around the world
to create.
Coming full circle, Luminous originally started out as an in-house department at Square Enix, where she previously shared responsibility for Final Fantasy 15.

What’s next for Forspoken? The developers assure that the technical problems are currently being worked on and that the performance should be improved with patches. The story DLC planned for summer In Tanta We Trust should also be dry.
After the flop of their last AAA project, Square Enix’s hopes should now rest on Final Fantasy 16, which will be released as a time-exclusive for the Playstation 5 at the end of June.
