This year Traditional summer video game presentations are being disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic that plagues the planet. Two of the big events that these press conferences host will not take place in the usual way: E3 2020 was canceled entirely and Gamescom 2020 will be held digitally. Because of these modifications, video game companies such as Ubisoft or Microsoft itself have already begun to move tab to make their ads individually.
Not be the case with Square Enix. The Japanese firm seems to have completely ruled out holding an online event in which to present news and update your fans regarding their current and future projects. It has been Takashi Mochizuki, a journalist from Bloomberg, who has confirmed this point in a tweet just published on his personal account.
Square Enix said it won't hold online event to unveil this FY's new releases around E3's timing because making assets ready for such show has become difficult due to Covid-19. Instead, it will announce new titles on individual basis.— Takashi Mochizuki (@ 6d6f636869) May 13, 2020
The reasons that Square Enix alludes not to carry out an event of its own are precisely the difficulties organizing one in the middle of the coronavirus crisis. Mochizuki says that the company "does not hold an online event to present its new releases" during the gap left by E3 because "Having the assets ready to show them has become impossible due to the COVID-19"
There won't be a big event, but there will be new releases individually
Of course, the company does not seem to rule out other types of presentations of its own for each game. The same journalist explains in his tweet that Square Enix "announce your new titles individually", instead of making a general event in which to show all the news. What Takashi Mochizuki does not clarify is when all these announcements could be released or if the company had them prepared in advance with the aim of not going through the same obstacles as those mentioned above.
Thus Square Enix departs from the current of summer news to which we are accustomed, following in the footsteps of other brands such as Bethesda, which also announced that it would not hold an alternative presentation to E3 2020.
