Director veteran Steven Spielberg draws a lot of criticism and frowns online when he talks about the Netflix hit series “Squid Game”. More on web world.
- Steven Spielberg calls the actors from “Squid Game” “unknown.”
- This caused a lot of opposition on social networks.
- The actors and actresses are only unknown from an American or Western perspective.
The South Korean horror and thriller series “Squid Game” is number 1. No show has been watched more often on the Netflix streaming service – even though the entertainment industry has long assumed that “Western” viewers ultimately only watch “western” productions with appropriate actors en masse.
Steven Spielberg calls ‘Squid Game’ actor ‘unknown’
Legendary director Steven Spielberg (“ET – The Extra-Terrestrial”, “Schindler’s List”) now spoke as part of a panel discussion at the PGA Awards about the mega series from South Korea – and the statements of the old master subsequently caused a lot of headwind on social networks out. What happened?
Spielberg explained (via Deadline) that in the past “domestic stars” would have drawn audiences to the movie theater. In the meantime, however, that has changed: “Today it is interesting unknown peoplewhich may appear in a miniseries […].”
“Squid Game” changed all those rules, Spielberg added, pointing to Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos.
The “Squid Game” actors are no strangers to South Korea
The little word “unknown” in particular sparked a lot of criticism online. Like the British newspaper Independent reported, users in social networks wrote, for example: “LOL just some of the most famous performers in Korea.” or “Another day, another American who thinks the world revolves around them.”
In fact, “Squid Game” lead actor Lee Jung-jae (plays Seong) is one of the biggest stars ever in his home country South Korea. O Yeong-su, who plays the old man, also started his career in 1967.
Ultimately, Steven Spielberg wanted to use his words to point out with certainty that “Squid Game” proves that studios and streamers do not necessarily have to rely on well-known (western) faces among the actors for a project to be a great success, but the master would have can certainly choose his words a little more carefully here.
