Star Ocean: The Second Story R was just announced during today’s Nintendo Direct. The game is a remake of the second Star Ocean game and will launch on the Nintendo Switch on November 2.
The game has all-new graphics, mixing 2D and 3D in a gorgeous new engine. You can see excellent pixel models moving in 3D environments, and lovely 2D drawn portraits of characters.
The original game’s real-time combat system returns, allowing you to control and battle characters in your party with far more freedom than the typical turn-based RPG systems of the time. With the remake, you can stun enemies with chain attacks and call in allies who aren’t currently on your active party for limited help during combat.
In “Star Ocean: The Second Story R”, you can choose Cloud or Reina as the protagonist and experience the story from their perspective. Your choices will affect the different party members you can recruit, as well as events in the narrative, so it’s a pretty big decision!
A remake of Star Ocean 1 (titled Star Ocean: First Departure R) was released in 2019 to mediocre reviews.
“Star Ocean 1” remake released in 2019? A fairly standard remake of the classic RPG, it’s “starting to show its age,” according to critics like Friends at Nintendo Life. Hopefully, the improved combat system and new visuals in Star Ocean: Second Story R will help modernize this new game.
