It would have been nice: After “Star Trek 4” was announced for December 2023, Paramount is now removing the film from the calendar again. Does that mean the project is on hold?
- So far, “Star Trek 4” with Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana and Co. should start in cinemas in December 2023.
- Paramount has now canceled the film.
- Without a director for the project, the production has to be postponed.
Due to various series from Paramount+, which found their home in Germany with different streaming providers, interest in “Star Trek” is now greater than it has been for decades. It is all the more surprising that no new “Star Trek” film has been released since “Star Trek Beyond” from 2016.
There was no shortage of plans, but the productions always failed due to a lack of actors, directors or screenplays. In 2023 the time had finally come: “Star Trek 4”, with the cast from the last three films and Matt Shakman as director, was announced by Paramount for December 22, 2023.
In August 2022, however, Shakman left the project to shoot Fantastic Four for Marvel instead, and now, a month later, Paramount has removed Star Trek 4 from the release calendar.
This does not automatically mean that “Star Trek 4” will not come, but further delays can be expected. The search for a replacement for Shakman is ongoing, and new schedules may mean that some cast members move on to other projects, pushing things further and further back.
It can still be assumed that “Star Trek 4” will await us sometime in 2024, but “Star Trek” fans can only be really relieved when filming has really started and there is no longer any doubt about a further return to the Kelvin -Timeline exists.
In the world of series you get more on offer, Season 3 of “Star Trek: Lower Decks” is currently running on Amazon Prime Video, Season 3 of “Star Trek: Picard” starts in February 2023 and Season 5 of “Star Trek: Discovery” is likely not be long in coming. “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” is expected to continue in the summer of 2023, although Season 1 in Germany still has to start in December 2022 together with Paramount+.
