“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” has started in Germany. The series is particularly worthwhile for critics of “Discovery” and “Picard”, because it approaches a modern “Star Trek” problem in a completely different way.
- Compared to the other controversial modern “Star Trek” series, “Strange New Worlds” is almost universally well received.
- Compared to “Star Trek: Discovery” and “Picard”, the series tells a new story with each episode.
- The episodic structure of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” makes the world more colorful, exciting and diverse!
With the German launch of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” on Paramount+, we can finally enjoy the new series from the “Star Trek” universe in this country. Unlike “Star Trek: Discovery” and “Star Trek: Picard,” the series has been praised by fans both old and new. After all the controversial new series, any surprise?
In fact, this euphoria doesn’t come as a surprise, because the series uses a simple trick and brings a breath of fresh air into the “Star Trek” landscape by relying on a tried and tested formula: the individual episodes tell self-contained plots.
The classic series “Starship Enterprise”, “The Next Century”, “Deep Space Nine” and “Starship Voyager” all followed an episodic structure. Even before the start of “Strange New Worlds” it was announced that the series would return to this structure – with success!
Compared to the other modern series, with the exception of “Star Trek: Lower Decks”, the entire universe is not at stake. There is no all-consuming threat. They are entertaining adventures with likeable protagonists and lots of wit and charm.
This lightness in the story brings an amazingly fresh wind into the “Star Trek” universe and shows once and for all: Just because modern series tell cross-season plots does not mean that every series that wants to be successful has to follow this structure!
Since the first season, some fans of “Star Trek: Discovery” have complained that the plot is suitable for a film but would feel too long in series form. Even with “Star Trek: Picard”, these long stories, which are told over ten or more episodes, could not pick up every viewer.
It is therefore very interesting that “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” is celebrated as a small sensation among “Star Trek” fans. Basically, the creators don’t use any groundbreaking ideas, they just go back to the “Star Trek” roots and bring back the fun and optimism!
It also succeeds in opening up the “Star Trek” world to everyone again. In each episode there are new aliens, new worlds and new challenges. It doesn’t get monotonous with “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” so quickly!
“Star Trek: Discovery” Season 5 starts next year and “Star Trek: Picard” Season 3 even starts in February 2023. We list all “Star Trek” new releases!
