Announced, canceled, restarted and then disappeared into obscurity again – that’s roughly the short version of the development story of the remake of the fan favorite Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. A long time ago, in 2021, developer Aspyr announced plans to re-release the game, only to stop development some time later due to a lack of progress. In the meantime, Saber Interactive has taken over the game, started all over again and everything could have been fine. But then As is well known, developer Saber Interactive and the parent company Embracer parted ways and the project became quiet again.
But just like some characters in the Star Wars universe, the Knights of the Old Republic remake just doesn’t seem to want to stay dead. Now Matthew Karch, CEO of developer Saber Interactive, has come forward and announced that there is no reason for Star Wars fans to throw the blaster into the grain just yet.
“It is clear and obvious that we are working on it. […] What I’m saying is that the game is alive and well and we are committed to exceeding consumer expectations.”
For now, you can leave the Wookie in the closet and the lightsaber in the toolbox. As part of the separation of Saber Interactive and the Embracer Group, Embracer boss Lars Wingefors made it clear to investors at the time that the KotOR remake could be a long time coming.

However, Saber Interactive has at least retained the rights to the IP and is now racing towards the completion of the new game. Unfortunately, when it comes to the release date, we can only speculate. Insiders once spoke of 2025, but that was still at a time when Aspyr was involved in the project. Let’s just hope the force is with the Knights of the Old Republic and Saber Interactive.
