Star Wars Outlaws, along with the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows, was supposed to be Ubisoft’s savior for 2024. But the first predictions are sobering.
Ubisoft still doesn’t seem to be able to get back on its feet this year. The share prices are looking poor and the first shareholders are already raising the alarm. And now this. Star Wars Outlaws, one of the publisher’s big hopes, seems to be falling well short of expectations, and we don’t mean the equally unconvincing ratings (even if the game itself isn’t bad).
Although Ubisoft itself has not yet released sales figures, According to analysts The title seems to be on the verge of being a flop, albeit at a relatively high level. The market research company Ampere Analysis assumes that only 800,000 copies of the game for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S were sold by the end of August.
However, the number is not really meaningful. Firstly, it does not include PC sales, and secondly, the game was only officially released on August 30th, with early access on August 27th. The actual numbers could there fore be much higher and well over a million.
The statement that the sales figures are rather bleak is supported by the physical sales in Great Britain as a marker. So far, only half as many copies have been sold there as for Assassin’s Creed: Mirage and that really doesn’t sound good considering the presumably excessive production costs and the high marketing budget.
The rather poor figures certainly do not help to ease the worries of Ubisoft’s management. For comparison: Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 reported a whopping two million copies sold in the same period, i.e. two days after release plus early access, which is roughly twice as many as Star Wars Outlaws.
