Star Wars: Outlaws was perhaps the biggest new announcement of the Summer Showcases. In the aftermath, more and more details about Ubisoft’s hopefuls are becoming known, for example with regard to the gameplay on the different planets in the Star Wars title.
Creative Director Julian Gerighty has turned to Japanese Famitsu following the official announcement of Star Wars: Outlaws with more details about the action hope. Among other things, he promised that each of the planets that can be entered in the game world should feel unique in terms of gameplay. What you experience there and how you proceed in each case should therefore differ noticeably in each individual case.
“During development, we kept in mind that each and every planet should offer a different gaming experience. For example, on Toshara you can explore the harsh wilderness on a speeder bike, while on another planet you work as a thief in secret within the city’s underworld can become,” said Gerighty. The mentioned planet Toshara is the one you also saw in the announcement trailer.
Star Wars: Outlaws is supposed to offer a varied gameplay, although Gerighty admits that there will not be nearly as many planets or randomly generated content as in Starfield or No Man’s Sky, for example. However, you can look forward to both new planets and iconic Star Wars planets that will be integrated into the game world in equal measure. However, the developer has not yet commented on the exact number of individual systems.
Meanwhile, Narrative Director Navid Khavari has elaborated on the story’s setting. Accordingly, Star Wars: Outlaws will be located on the timeline between “Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back” and “Episode VI: Return of the Jedi”. This is the time when the underground criminal syndicates were most active. Khavari is referring to the five syndicates that were mentioned more or less extensively in the films on various occasions.
Lucas Film is said to be heavily involved in the creative process surrounding the game; the idea for the chronological location of the game originally came from Lucas Film. The Star Wars veterans are said to be helping Ubisoft not only with story and lore, but also in terms of gameplay. For fans of the sci-fi franchise, Star Wars: Outlaws should therefore be an implementation that remains largely true to the material.
And this also has a certain scope, even if it may not come close to comparable titles in terms of the number of planets. This is made clear by the fact that the planet Toshara alone will represent a larger explorable game world, like Washington DC in Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 – confirmed game director Mathias Karlson.
Star Wars: Outlaws will be released in 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
