Blizzard Entertainment is probably making the next attempt to bring the StarCraft strategy franchise into a shooter! At least that’s what one of the most renowned insiders in the industry reports.
The sci-fi franchise StarCraft from Blizzard Entertainment is considered one of the best brands when it comes to real-time strategy games. The cult developer has already tried something far away from this genre, but has failed so far. The shooter genre is now making a new attempt – at least if you believe one of the most renowned insiders in the games industry.
In this case, what is meant is the well-informed and well-connected Jason Schreier from Bloomberg, who addresses the topic in his new book “Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment”. This states that Blizzard is developing a new StarCraft shooter with a team led by Dan Hay, the former lead designer of Far Cry.
Schreier recently made an appearance at IGN-Podcast and talked about this passage from his book and the potential new sci-fi game. Host Ryan McCaffrey asked directly whether the project in question was still actively in the works or had been canceled in the meantime. Schreier emphasized that, as far as he knows, the game is still in development: “StarCraft is not dead at Blizzard.” However, on the other hand, he also points out that “the history of StarCraft shooters [bei Blizzard] “not good”.
Will the new attempt be successful? Blizzard had already tried such a project in the early to mid-2000s. StarCraft: Ghost was quite advanced and was sometimes hyped – only to be discontinued in the end. In later years, Blizzard also had the Ares project. This first-person shooter was in the works for at least two years and was then canceled in 2019. And this time?
At least with Hay they have brought a man with great shooter expertise on board. He worked on Far Cry 3 to 6 and also has Marvel Ultimate Alliance and 007 Nightfire on his CV.
