Not long ago, Starfield became controversial over something that was outside of its purview and was destroyed by players because of it. What happened ?
The Steam Awards 2023 made their verdict a few days ago. As a reminder, this is an awards ceremony on the Valve platform with a twist: it is the community that determines the winners through voting. And Starfield actually won a very special award. Unfortunately, this didn’t go unnoticed by the players. The problem is that some of them expressed their dissatisfaction in a way that others found unfair.
Starfield causes controversy and is destroyed on Steam
Bethesda’s RPG was nominated in a single category at the 2023 Steam Awards: “Best Innovative Gameplay” and managed to win. Opposite Starfield we found Remnant 2, but also Shadows of Doubt and Contraband Police. As expected, this was not well received by everyone and complaints were voiced on social networks. “ I’m pretty sure this is a PC gamer joke », « What did he innovate? How to make the game as boring as possible? », we could read, among other things.
On the one hand, the community’s surprise is understandable. Starfield does not have any gameplay that could be described as innovative. It makes greater use of a proven formula that is well known to fans. Therefore, some players think it is a joke. Ultimately, whatever the reasons, what interests us today is what followed on the Valve platform. The game received a new wave of negative reviews, causing the average to drop even further.
In itself, before this controversy, Starfield already had an “Average” rating from more than 85,000 reviews (at the time of writing, it is over 90,000). Nevertheless, new opinions emerged, and for one reason: the award he received. We may not like the game, but it seems a bit unfair to attack him for that very reason without citing other reasons to support his point. Let’s not forget that in this case, Bethesda’s latest game won this award thanks to the votes of players, even if it was perhaps meant to be a joke.
Is there a rise ahead for the role-playing game?
The results for Starfield are therefore somewhat bleak. At least for now, because that could change in 2024. Yes, its creator and Xbox have no intention of abandoning it anytime soon. We already suspect that modders will keep it alive for a while, but regular updates can also be expected. “In 2024, we will release updates approximately every six weeks, with our next major patch coming in February “, the editor explained to us. We’re getting closer to implementing this huge patch, which looks promising. In addition, the “Shattered Space” expansion will be released this year.
