If you’re looking forward to diving into Starfield’s Shattered Space expansion when it launches later this month, you’re in luck, because Bethesda has just released a new deep dive video where the developers behind some of the DLC give you a sneak peek into what to expect when you set out to discover what the heck happened to House Va-ruun.
While we’ve been given plenty of details and hints about how the studio will approach DLC on a practical level and its thematic specifics, this is the first time Bethesda has really gone into depth about how your character will be pulled into the storyline, and what exactly they’ll be doing.

In this fresh in-depth video, several Starfield developers, including Lead Creative Producer Tim Lamb and Design Director Emil Pagliarulo, discuss the initial setup scene for the expansion’s main story, while also touching on a few other interesting details, some of which we’ve heard before.
So, what’s going on story-wise? As lead quest designer Brian Chapin explains, the expansion builds on the base game’s theme of “man’s quest for knowledge,” showing what happens when a group like the Va’ruun family goes too far. “Before the start of Shattered Space, a secret experiment involving gravity-drive technology has gone terribly wrong,” he says. Pagliarulo continues: “This has resulted in a massive rift in the fabric of spacetime, swallowing up a large portion of the Va’ruun capital of Dazra.”
You’ll be parachuted into the aftermath of this event, which seems to be called the “Vortex Incident” and has thrown House Va’ruun into chaos – people are missing and its seat of government, the “Scaly Castle”, is now “trapped in a strange energy field”. “Among the missing is Anasko Va’ruun, leader of the Va’ruun people and voice of the Serpent,” Pagliarulo explains, “and in his absence, the smaller houses that make up House Va’ruun are vying for control of the faction’s future.”
Beyond that, a lot more is detailed in the video, including new alien creatures dubbed the Vortex Terror, which look like they’ll be a lot of fun to watch as they launch sudden ambushes.
