At the beginning of the new year, Valve plans to release its Steam Deck mobile platform and enable PC gaming on the go. A variety of the hottest games on Steam will likely be compatible.
We are still waiting for the release of the Steam Deck and only the very least interested should have had a hand in Valve’s portable PC and Switch competitors, but there are still signs that these will be compatible with the majority of the most important games available on Steam will be. That comes from an analysis of the fansite ProtonDB.
This is a community that tests game compatibility on the Linux platform. The upcoming Steam Deck relies on Linux SteamOS and the site has subjected individual Steam games to a compatibility check. Result: A large part of the hottest Steam games will probably also run on Steam Deck.
Of the top 100 on Steam, around 80 percent should also work on Steam Deck; in case of doubt, only minor tweaks are necessary, according to the site. Nevertheless, potential buyers of the new hardware must first consider that selected heavyweights could be missing.
Background: The Proton platform used does not necessarily get along well with the anti-cheat services that are sometimes used in top titles. According to ProtonDB, there is therefore a chance that, for example, PUBG, Destiny 2, Apex Legends or Halo Infinite will not be compatible with Steam Deck.
We will of course keep you up to date and will also report when Valve publishes an official compatibility list for the platform. The release of the hardware was initially to be postponed to February 2022.
