The new Steam game recording has been in beta since June, but now it has officially launched and gives you a number of tools to record and edit your gameplay.
Do you still record your gameplay with OBS or NVIDIA Shadowplay? Well, from now on there is another alternative, because Steam has freed its feature kit for Steam game recording (or Steam Game Recording) from the clutches of the beta and officially launched it.
The new tool integrated into Steam offers you the ability to record, play, edit and share gameplay. When recording, you have the option to choose between automatic background recording with length and storage space limitations or manual recording. Thanks to the timeline and markers, you can easily find special moments. Automatic markings are also possible if the game supports the timeline, for example when obtaining an achievement or a highlight set by the developer, such as a boss kill.
You can then play your recordings straight from the Steam overlay. You also have the option of editing and trimming your clips if you only want to keep excerpts from your recording. You can then share your videos directly in Steam chat and on other platforms or send them to your mobile device. Thanks to the overlay, this is also possible directly while playing.
Steam saves all clips in the optimized Steam timeline format, but exporting to MP4 format is also available. Practical: the Steam game recording is also fully functionally integrated into the Steam Deck. Also practical: the recording also works for non-Steam titles, as long as the game allows the Steam overlay to be executed. SDK and API for developers are also available now.
