A few times a year, Valve takes to its Steam sales platform, scoops up everything that can provide a demo from the mass of upcoming titles and then serves up its Steam Next Fest. With over 100 demos there should be something interesting for everyone. Here are a few highlights.
Fans of real-time strategy games should have had Stormgate on their list for a long time. The free-to-play RTS was created by former Warcraft III and Starcraft II developers and you can see it from afar. The Human Vanguard, who come from Earth, defend themselves against nasty and aggressive demon aliens with horns, claws and far too many teeth. A chic fusion of fantasy and sci-fi with a supposedly extremely epic campaign and many game modes that offer an incentive to jump into an adventure with friends. Above all, the makers of Stormgate want to gain a foothold in the hotly contested e-sports market and thus take a piece of the pie away from their old employers. During the Steam Next Fest there will be a publicly accessible demo for the first time, which you can take a look at at any time.
If you’re drawn to the depths of (your own) earth instead of outer space, then perhaps it’s worth taking a look at Dungeonborne. The PvPvE first-person dungeon crawler sends you into dark dungeons in search of treasure, fame and everything else that lies around in dungeons. Use a variety of weapons or spells to make your opponents bleed alone, with up to two allies or in exciting 3vs3 arenas.
But the Backpack Battles, which was so highly praised by colleague Pirmin, the long-awaited Homeworld 3 and the zombie-taming co-op adventure Welcome to Paradize are also available with playable demos. The Steam Next Fest runs until February 12th. So many games to try and so little time…
