Steam will be celebrating its 20th birthday next year and today it’s hard to compare to its original version, which was little more than a launcher for Half-Life 2 and Counter Strike was. Through numerous updates and regular additions of new features, Valve has made Steam the leading platform for PC gamers to not only buy games, but also to chat, write reviews and sell trading cards.
The latest feature that has now been added to Steam may seem small at first glance, but it makes it easier for you to get free games and DLCs.
There are also regular free games available in the Epic Store – you can read in our report how much the launcher has caught up in recent years:
Epic Games Store vs. Steam
Who is leading the battle of the big game stores?
A small button creates enthusiasm
If you previously wanted to add free games or add-ons to your Steam library, you had to click the green button on the relevant shop page start Game
button.
However, this has a major disadvantage: Not only will your Steam account be credited with the appropriate license, but the game’s installation process will always start automatically. This can be canceled without any problems, but it is still annoying.
It’s even more annoying with free DLCs: If you already had the associated game installed, it would launch with each added DLC. This could quickly become frustrating, especially with a title like Monster Hunter: World, which regularly gave away hairstyles and other small items in the Steam Store.
But those times are over now, because from now on you can secure everything that is currently free with a new blue button without having to put up with the annoying side effects:
Even if the button only seems like a small innovation, many fans have apparently been waiting for it for a long time.
So writes about Strict-Tomorrow on Reddit:
This is great if a game has free DLC that you want to claim. Before this option, every DLC forced the game to start.
Starmoses already knows what he wants to use the new button for:
This will be great for Warhammer 3 with all the free DLC that they will hopefully add. Before, it was a nightmare to download the stuff.
Wanderson90 jokes:
You finally understood that we are here to spend a bunch of money on games, we don’t want to install and play them at all.
Our tip: Every Friday we present you the current free games and free weekends on Steam – the perfect opportunity to try the button for yourself.
Now we have another free game for you – not on Steam but on Epic, but hey, it’s a gift. Rejoice! You can find out here which title you can only secure until August 18, 2022:
What do you think of the new Steam feature? Do you join in the cheering of the numerous users or can’t the blue button even make you shrug your shoulders? Write it to us in the comments!
