Is it still possible to see Superman on the big screen? Will Henry Cavill definitely be ousted? James Gunn reacts.
Considered by many to be one of the few (if not THE only) good DCU movies man of Steel should have the right to a long-awaited sequel, and the latter should above all mark the great return of Henry Cavill as Superman. Unfortunately, as we told you recently, all hopes seemed to have suddenly vanished since the arrival of James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm of the DCU, despite the actor announcing that he was leaving The Witcher series to reclaim the cloak the indestructible superhero.
However, Cavill should have had a much more important place and even a giant Avengers-style film was planned. But during a recent tribute to the superhero, James Gunn, now the head of the DCU, spoke about the Superman sequel and was reassuring. Can we still have hope?
Superman, a top priority for Gunn
It is that Hollywood reporter which brings us once again the information that James Gunn would have reassured fans about the treatment of DC’s emblematic superhero. As he celebrated the anniversary of Richard Donner’s Superman (1978), which turned 44 this weekend, fans snapped up at the director to ask him a series of questions, to which he provided some answers.
Having brushed aside any hopes of a teaser, fans asked Gunn if he was planning a Superman return to the big screen, to which the Guardians of the Galaxy 3 director replied a resounding yes.
Yes of course. Superman has a big priority, if not the biggest priority

More than ever, Superman is the center of attention at DC, and that’s a good thing. But then what about Man of Steel 2 and Henry Cavill? If James Gunn doesn’t offer any hints about the long-awaited sequel here, he still calms the enthusiasm of some hardcore fans who have attacked him by saying that he just didn’t like Henry Cavill’s Superman, any more than he liked the actor himself.
To that critic, James Gunn answered a simple “Of course: it’s wrong”. He’ll also lose his temper a bit if some fans persist on the subject, stirring up rumors and unconfirmed “hearsay”.
If the solo film that would seal Henry Cavill’s big return in Superman is pretty much on hold at the moment, nothing is visibly final. James Gunn has nothing against Cavill, he doesn’t pledge his return, but he doesn’t say no to the actor either. The concerns lie elsewhere, and we will only have answers much later. For his part, Cavill said on his social media that he was very excited about the idea of James Gunn ending up at DC and very excited about the sequel. What is certain, however, is that Gunn and Safran’s arrival at the helm of DCU seemed like a real bombshell.
What’s next for the DCU?
Most of the ongoing projects would be skipped or at least happily put on standby wonder woman 3 with Gal Gadot or aquaman 2 with Jason Momoa, who would be cast for another lead role. Without talking about it Batman beyondthe film that would mark the return of Michael Keaton here.
man of steel 2 is also stalled at the moment. According to the Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) had been poring over the project and reportedly writing a good chunk of the script before being asked to raise hands. Cavill’s return was therefore assured before the arrival of Gunn and Safran.
In addition, after the Hollywood reporter, Ex-DCU boss Walter Hamada was also working on a long-term plan to reinstate Henry Cavill. Many cameos had to be placed in the movies of the universe before a huge Avengers-style movie inspired by the Crisis on Infinite Earth miniseries would put Superman in the spotlight.
So many films put aside to give James Gunn and Peter Safran time to sort out. The latter now have the arduous task of writing the rest of the DC Universe in cinemas in an attempt to catch up with the Marvel machine, which already has a sizable lead. The goal here is clear to reinstall DC theatrically for decades, it now remains to be seen if this quasi-universe reboot manages to pull itself out of the game, so for now we can only speculate and take the snippets of information provided here and there fall. James Gunn had also responded to the Hollywood Reports’ initial reports by confirming that some of what the journalists had found was true, while other claims were false or undecided. The director also urged fans to be patient.
As for the Hollywood Reporter article, some is true, some is semi-true, some is not true, and some is undecided.
While that first month in DC has been fruitful, building the next ten years of storyline will take time and we’re just getting started. We know we won’t make everyone happy, but we can promise that everything we do is in the service of STORY and in the service of the DC CHARACTERS that you cherish and have cherished throughout our lives.
As for the answers on the future of the DCU, I’m afraid I have to ask you to wait. We’re giving these characters and stories the time and attention they deserve, and we still have many questions of our own.Above Twitter
